Sold To | 1934 - Used as a NYC sanitation worker retreat. Later a training center for radio operators during WWII. Then in 1948 the Eastern Military Academy (boys military prep school) purchased Oheka and the remaining 23 acres. Gary Melius purchased it in 1984. Sold it to a Japanese businessman, though maintained use of it, and repurchased it again. |
Current Use | Oheka offers tours, weddings, banquets, charity events, business events, filming, photo shoots and is a luxury hotel. |
Notes: | The builder of Oheka was Wall Street financier Otto Hermann Kahn who achieved staggering wealth. He reorganized railroads,was a patron of the arts, and, after the stock market crash in 1929, spoke out eloquently in defense of bankers. After the school went bankrupt in 1978 and Oheka was abandoned, squatters, vandals, arsonists moved in on Oheka. The home was restored by Gary Melius. Oheka is currently one of the largest GOLD COAST MANSIONS. |
