Salutations, Salutation House, Junius Spencer Morgan III estate
Standing, private West Island, Glen Cove, Nassau County Built 1928 to 1929 for Junius Spencer Morgan III
West Island lies just off the shore of Glen Cove. Before the Morgans arrived it formed part of Dosoris, the Dana family estate, which had an arboretum and walking paths attributed to Frederick Law Olmsted. Junius Spencer Morgan III, born in 1892, was the eldest son of J. P. Morgan Jr. and a grandson of J. Pierpont Morgan. He worked every day at the family bank, although one colleague recalled that he would rather have been a marine architect. In 1915 he married Louise Converse, a daughter of the composer Frederick Converse.
The Morgans had earlier lived at Apple Trees, a Tudor Revival house that Roger H. Bullard designed for them. According to American Aristocracy, after selling Apple Trees they called on Bullard again in 1928 to build a new house on West Island, this time in a Neo-Georgian manner closer to Matinecock Point, the neighboring estate of J. P. Morgan Jr. on East Island. The house was completed in 1929. Bullard had strong ties to the family, having married a niece of J. Pierpont Morgan's first wife. Other sources date the house earlier: a 2017 sale report says the manor house was built in 1919, and an architectural database records ironwork by Samuel Yellin for Junius S. Morgan in 1919. The difference has not been resolved. The house has about 45 rooms and 27,000 square feet, and a later description lists sixteen bedrooms and a dining room that seats one hundred.
Junius Morgan died in 1960, and his widow stayed on at Salutation until a few years before her death in December 1974. That fall the estate was sold to John S. Samuels III, a Texas-born coal executive whose business empire later collapsed. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court put the estate up for auction in 1993, and Margo Walker bought the house and 21.5 acres for $9 million. She went on to acquire other houses on the island.
Salutation became a familiar film location. It served as the Larrabee family mansion in Sydney Pollack's Sabrina (1995), and later appeared in the NBC series Deception and as Tern Haven, the Pierce family home, in the HBO series Succession. In 2017 the entire island, with the manor house, five other residences, a dock and a 28-acre pond next to it, was listed for sale at $125 million. American Aristocracy reported that the house and island appeared to have been sold as of 2021, but no buyer has been confirmed. The house is private and cannot be visited.
